Goalkeeper born in Morpeth, Northumberland who later moved to Hersden near Canterbury in Kent and worked as a miner at Chislet Colliery.

Dickie had two spells with Margate, initially joining the club from Chislet Colliery Welfare in November 1948. He made his debut in a 4-2 win over Chatham in the Kent League at Hartsdown Park on 20.11.48 aged only 19 and Dickie quickly established himself as Margate's first-choice keeper. He made 25 appearances during 1948/49 and was quite consistent. However his performance in a 4-3 home defeat at the hands of Ashford on 19.2.49 didn't impress the Isle of Thanet Gazette. The paper criticised Dickie's positioning - he often left his goal - and said that he "seemed to prefer the wide open spaces to his proper position".

At the end of the 1948/49 season Dickie was released by the club but he returned briefly during November 1949 and made one or two reserve team appearances.

Dickie then returned to the club on a permanent basis in June 1950 and made his first senior appearance in a 1-1 draw at Sheppey in the Kent League on 11.11.50. He took over from Des Cross and Dickie then featured in Margate's next 11 matches whilst Cross played as a striker in four of them. Towards the end of January 1951 Dickie lost his place and with Cross re-established he only featured once more in the first team before the end of the season. Dickie thus finished the campaign having made 13 appearances.

During the first few months of the 1951/52 season he again found himself playing second fiddle to Cross and Dickie didn't feature in the senior side until 8.12.51 as Margate hammered Bowaters Lloyd 6-1 in a Kent League game at Hartsdown Park. He then kept his place for the next 17 matches and managed ten clean sheets in those games before Cyril Bingham took over in goal for the last three matches of the season. Dickie's last outing had come in a 3-2 home win over Folkestone on 14.4.52 and he ended the campaign having played 18 times.

In the summer of 1952 Dickie was released again by Margate and he later played for Herne Bay for several seasons - he was still with them during the 1957/58 campaign.

Dickie sadly died aged only 37 on 16.4.67 after collapsing whilst playing in an amateur game. He left a wife and six children.
