England Youth international full-back born in Bootle who progressed through Liverpool's youth ranks before signing professional forms in November 1950 shortly after his 18th birthday. Don made his first team debut in a 3-2 defeat at Sunderland in the 1st Division on 14.11.53 and went on to make nearly 50 senior appearances for Liverpool spanning the 1953/54 to 1957/58 seasons. He also made 85 reserve team appearances during that time.

In July 1958 Liverpool sold Don to Crewe for £4,000 and he made 169 senior appearances for them before signing for Gillingham in September 1962.

He made 33 first team appearances for the Gills during 1962/63 and after Margate failed to sign him in February 1964 Don moved on to Folkestone in August 1964.

He won Folkestone's 'Player of the Year' award for 1964/65 although he trained with Margate throughout that season.

In the summer of 1967 Don signed for Margate and made his debut in 0-0 draw at Nuneaton in the Southern League on 19.8.67 - the opening day of the 1967/68 campaign. Don went on to make 59 appearances during the season (two as a substitute) and usually played as a right-back but also featured in midfield occasionally. He scored twice and Don's first goal was a superb 40 yard free-kick in a 6-4 home win over Ramsgate in the FA Cup on 14.10.67. On 13.12.67 he was in the side that won 3-1 at Yeovil in the FA Cup 1st Round and Don also played in the 2nd Round as Margate lost 4-0 at home to Peterborough on 6.1.68.

On 13.4.68 he featured in the 2nd Leg of the Southern League Cup Final - a 0-0 draw with Ramsgate at Southwood - and on 9.5.68 Don found the net with a brilliant 30-yard volley in a 3-1 win over visitors Weymouth. Throughout the season he won praise for his energetic displays and the local press praised Don's excellent tackling and covering skills. He was described as being "a tower of strength" as well as "polished and accomplished". On 16.5.68 Don was in the Margate team that secured the Southern League Cup by beating Ramsgate 3-1 in a replay at Hartsdown Park.

During the 1968/69 season he was in and out of the side, mainly due to various niggling injuries, and made a total of 40 appearances (one as sub). Don played in various positions but mostly featured in midfield and he was described as "steadfast" by the local paper. On 16.11.68 he was in the side that lost 3-1 at Northampton in the FA Cup 1st Round.

Don broke his nose in a 1-1 draw at Ramsgate in the Kent Senior Cup on 25.2.69 and on 20.5.69 he played as Margate drew 1-1 at Maidstone in the 1st Leg of the Kent Floodlight Cup Final. He also featured in the 2nd Leg at Hartsdown Park on 24.5.69 as Margate won 3-1 to claim the trophy. At the end of the season Don was released by Margate and retired.

He made the briefest of comebacks during the 1969/70 campaign when he made a one-off appearance for Canterbury.

Don worked as a painter and decorator during his time with Margate.
