Howard made 17 Southern League appearances for the Nuts & Bolts before being signed by Coventry in March 1966.

He spent around 16 months with the Sky Blues but moved on to Gillingham in July 1967 having never played for Coventry's first team.

Howard spent the first half of the 1967/68 season with the Gills and made 19 first team appearances without scoring before moving on again in January 1968.

He signed for Southend but never established himself at Roots Hall and made only seven senior appearances before joining Port Vale in July 1968.

After a year in which he never made a first team appearance Howard left the Valiants and joined Margate during September 1969.

He made his debut in a 5-2 defeat at Yeovil on 20.9.69 and impressed with his intelligent play and mazy dribbling. However Howard never gained a regular place and he became known as the club's perennial substitute during the 1969/70 campaign. He was only actually brought on once and at the end of the season Howard was released having made 14 appearances (one as sub) without scoring.

Howard joined Canterbury for the 1970/71 season and made 34 Southern League appearances (one as sub) for City, scoring four goals, before linking up with Dartford for the 1971/72 campaign. However Howard only made five appearances for the Darts before moving on once more.
