Defender who started his career with Gillingham. Ian played for the Gills' youth team during 1976/77 and 1977/78 before moving to Maidstone for the 1978/79 season.

He stayed with the Stones for 1979/80 and later had a spell at Bromley before joining Dartford in the summer of 1981.

Towards the end of 1981 Ian left the Darts having only played six games for them and signed for Welling. He went on to make over 300 appearances for the Wings before a knee injury ended his career during the 1986/87 campaign.

In March 1990 Ian became Colin Powell's assistant at Margate and took charge of the first team for two games towards the end of the month when Powell was unavailable. Ian also started training with a view to playing again.

He stayed on as Powell's right-hand man for the start of the 1990/91 season and when Powell left Margate in October 1990 Ian became assistant to new manager Steve McRaye. On 17.11.90 Ian made his comeback as a player after over three years out of the game and the Adscene reported that he made "excellent debut and held the defence together well" at centre-back as Margate beat Bury 1-0 at Hartsdown Park. For the next couple of months Ian became a regular in the side, always playing as a central defender and always wearing a substantial knee brace, and on 15.12.90 he scored in a 4-2 defeat at Corinthian. In January 1991 Tommy Taylor took over from McRaye as Margate's manager and Ian kept his assistant role initially. On 26.1.91 he made his last appearance as a player in a 4-1 defeat at Buckingham and shortly afterwards Ian left the club altogether. He'd played 13 times (once as a sub) and scored once during his surprise comeback.

Ian joined Kent League outfit Alma Swanley immediately after leaving Margate and then retired again at the end of the 1990/91 season.

During the 2007/08 campaign Ian was still active in Kent football and managed one of Fawkham-based club Corinthian's Under-18 teams then.

By the start of the 2009/10 campaign he was assistant manager of Welling's reserve side.
