5'10" tall full-back born in Welwyn Garden City to Scottish parents who played for Hertfordshire-based Wormley Youth as a schoolboy and helped them to win a tournament that took place on Canvey Island.

James was on Arsenal's books from the age of eight and he was a lifelong fan of the club. In the summer of 2010 he signed scholarship forms for the Gunners but suffered with shin splints during the 2010/11 campaign. James made seven appearances for Arsenal's Under-18's side during 2011/12 but at the end of the season he was released. During his time with the club he'd won caps for Scotland at both Under-17 and Under-19 levels.

In July 2012 James had a trial with Dundee before being signed by Premier League outfit Stoke later in the summer. He became part of the Potters' Elite Development Squad and played regularly in the Under-21's Premier League during the first half of the 2012/13 campaign.

In January 2013 James joined Margate on loan and made his debut at left-back in a 1-0 defeat at Wingate & Finchley in the Isthmian League Premier Division on 2.2.13. Margate's website said he was "particularly instrumental" and James started each of the next five games. He made his last appearance in a 2-1 win over Hampton & Richmond at Hartsdown Park on 23.2.13 but then picked up a hamstring problem and after missing two matches due to injury James returned to Stoke.
