Joe then progressed into the Rams first team aged 17 during the 1951/52 campaign. He also spent the 1952/53 season at Southwood and was a regular in Ramsgate's Kent League side during 1953/54 too until joining Margate in January 1954.

Joe made his debut for the club in a 1-1 draw at Betteshanger on 30.1.54 and played twice more for the first team before the end of the season.

He stayed with the club for the start of the 1954/55 season and played for the reserves before departing to start his National Service in November 1954. Joe served in the RAF and was posted to the Far East initially before being relocated to Germany where he was spotted playing football and offered a trial with Bolton.

Joe also had a short spell on Fulham's books during his National Service and played for their reserves alongside the great Johnny Haynes.

Margate retained Joe's registration for the 1955/56 season but he didn't make any first team appearances during his spells of leave from the RAF.

In October 1956 Joe returned to the club on a full-time basis having been demobbed and he spent the majority of the 1956/57 season in the reserves. Joe also made three first team appearances, the first of them in a 4-1 defeat at Sheppey on 29.12.56 and the others during April 1957.

During the 1957/58 season he continued to play for the reserves and also made 11 first team appearances.

Joe then played 13 more first team games during the 1958/59 campaign although he was still mainly a reserve player. On 3.1.59 he scored as Margate went down 4-3 to Bexleyheath & Welling in a Kent League game at Hartsdown Park but it proved to be Joe's one and only goal for the club as he was released at the end of the season. He rejoined Ramsgate for the 1959/60 campaign.

In January 1960 Joe was released by the Rams and he returned to Margate to play for the reserves. He also made one first team appearance, playing at left-back in a 4-3 win over Folkestone at Hartsdown Park on 20.2.60.

In the summer of 1960 Joe was released by Margate once again and he joined Deal. He went on to spend several seasons there, up to and including the 1962/63 campaign.

In the summer of 1963 Joe left Deal but he later returned to the club once more and played for their reserves during the 1969/70 season. He also played for Christchurch in the Thanet Premier Sunday League at that time.

Joe played for Kent's Junior side whilst at Margate and his son Clive played for Thanet United in the 1980's.

Joe later worked as a driving instructor in the Thanet area and by 2004 he was retired and living in Ramsgate.

His grandson Ben played for Margate's reserves during the 2011/12 season.

Joe died in Thanet on 5.11.13 at the age of 79.
