Stepney-born midfielder who played for the Hackney & Tower Hamlets district team and the London Federation of Boys Clubs as a youngster. John was on Chelsea's books for a while and then spent three years with West Ham as a schoolboy.

In March 1991 he joined Charlton on non-contract terms aged 15 and played for the club's Colts side during the remainder of the 1990/91 season. John signed trainee forms for the Addicks in July 1991 and played for the Colts and reserves throughout 1991/92. One of John's team-mates was future Premier League player Lee Bowyer and the two of them became good friends.

In October 1992 John was released by Charlton and he immediately joined Reading as a non-contract player. After a short spell with the Berkshire club he dropped into amateur football.

Early in 1994 John joined Dover from local football and played for the club's reserves during what remained of the 1993/94 campaign. In the summer of 1994 he had trials with Barnet, Brighton and Southampton but they came to nothing so John stayed with Dover and made a few first team appearances for the Conference club during 1994/95 and 1995/96.

In the summer of 1996 John signed for Margate and made his debut in midfield in a 4-1 win over Yate at Hartsdown Park on 17.8.96. It was the opening day of the 1996/97 season and Chris Kinnear's first game as Margate manager. John wore the number eight shirt in each of the next six games before new signing Dave Bourne took his place following a 2-1 defeat at Forest Green on 7.9.96. After that John was a perennial substitute and on 8.10.96 he scored to earn Margate a 2-1 win after coming on in the first leg of a Southern League Cup tie at Erith & Belvedere. John was injured in the process of scoring and then had to replaced himself. The second leg against the Deres was played at Hartsdown Park on 29.10.96 and John again came off the bench. It was his last appearance for Margate and in November 1996 he was released having scored once in 13 appearances (six as sub). John left Hartsdown Park at the same time as John Brunning and both players immediately joined Fisher.

He moved on to Maldon towards the end of the 1996/97 campaign and made 29 appearances there. Ben Embery was the club's manager so he was clearly related to John.

A few weeks into 1997/98 John moved on to Gravesend & Northfleet and made three sub appearances in the Isthmian Premier League before joining Tonbridge in November 1997.

John scored once in 16 appearances (12 as sub) for the Angels before the end of the season.

He linked up with Erith & Belvedere for the start of 1998/99 and John went on to spend over three years with the Deres. He made 60 appearances (19 as sub) and scored six goals before leaving the club during the 2001/02 campaign.

John later coached a junior team called Kings Hill in the Tonbridge area and played for Camden-based Sunday side Globetown for several seasons from 2006/07 through to 2009/10.

In 2011 he was working as a coach at the Next Level Coaching Academy based in Tunbridge Wells and also coached Bearsted's Under-12's team. John's son Jake played for the side at the time.
