Keeper who began his career with Gillingham and also had a spell with Chatham before moving on to Dartford in February 1969. John made his Southern League debut for the Darts in a game at Merthyr on 9.8.69.

He joined Margate on loan from the Darts in February 1970 and played four times before returning to Watling Street, making his debut in a 0-0 draw at Romford on 7.2.70.

John went on to spend several more seasons with Dartford, recovering from a career-threatening knee ligament injury to make over 250 appearances for them. During 1972/73 he was picked to play for Kent and John was in goal as the Darts lost 2-1 to Morecambe in the FA Trophy Final at Wembley in 1974.

He left Dartford to join Wealdstone for the 1974/75 campaign. John stayed with them until 1977 and was said to struggle in games played under floodlights due to the fact that he wore contact lenses.

He later spent several seasons with Hounslow and was still with them during the 1979/80 campaign. John then moved to Hayes for the 1980/81 season.

He worked as a teacher.
