Agile England Youth international keeper born in Bedford who started his career with Luton. Malcolm signed professional forms with the Hatters in the summer of 1970 and then almost immediately joined Margate on a 12 month loan. Luton felt a season of Southern League football would be good experience for him although Coventry were also interested in Malcolm.

He made his debut for Margate in the opening game of the 1970/71 campaign - a 3-0 win at Telford in the Southern League on 15.8.70. Malcolm went on to make a total of 46 appearances during the season. There were spells where he fell out of favour, most notably towards the end of the season when Allen Clarke joined the club on loan from Charlton, but generally Malcolm did well and displayed safe handling and bravery. He managed to save four penalties during the season, including a run of three in a row, and turned in a brilliant display in Margate's 1-0 win at Herne Bay in the FA Cup on 7.11.70. On 21.11.70 he played as Margate lost 2-0 at Dagenham in the FA Cup 1st Round.

At the end of the season Malcolm returned to Kenilworth Road but he never made a first team appearance for Luton.

He moved on to Cambridge United early in the 1971/72 season and then joined Bristol Rovers in October 1971.

Malcolm made eight first team appearances for Rovers before signing for Watford in July 1973.

He made five appearances for the Hornets during 1973/74 but they were the last Football League matches he played in.

During the 1975/76 and 1976/77 seasons Malcolm was with Hendon and he then linked up with Southport for the 1978/79 campaign, their first in the Northern Premier League after relegation from the Football League. He made 15 appearances during the season.
