Locally born player who initially joined Margate during the 1972/73 season and played exclusively for the reserves at that time, winning the Banks Cup for being the club's best young player.

In August 1973 Marcus signed amateur forms for Luton and he also played for Margate's reserves throughout the 1973/74 campaign, winning the Banks Cup once more.

During the 1974/75 season Marcus turned in a string of impressive performances in the reserves and he also played twice for the first team, making his debut in a Kent Messenger Trophy tie against Folkestone & Shepway at Hartsdown on 18.2.75. He also played in another KMT tie against Ashford on 3.4.75 and had a good game in a lone striker role. The Isle of Thanet Gazette said that Marcus "covered almost every blade of the Hartsdown turf" and added "he has a long career in first team football ahead of him".

During the 1975/76 season Marcus made four further first team appearances (two as sub) and again impressed when called upon. However he left the club at the end of the campaign when the reserve team was disbanded for financial reasons.

Marcus then joined Ramsgate in the summer of 1976 and he went on to make over 150 appearances for the Rams before leaving the club in November 1979.

In December 1979 Marcus rejoined Margate and he made his first appearance when he played at right-back in a 2-1 win over Crawley on 15.12.79. He marked the occasion by scoring with a left-footed shot from fully 25 yards. He went on to make 17 appearances (two as a substitute) before the end of the 1979/80 campaign, playing either as a full-back or in midfield, and scored three further goals. The best of them was a rising shot from the edge of the penalty area in a 3-1 defeat at home to Fareham on 12.1.80.

However Marcus left the club once more at the end of the season and joined Deal as their captain. He spent the 1980/81 season there but offered to help Margate out when the club was faced with a drastic player shortage in March 1981. As a result Marcus made two appearances as a loan player before the end of the campaign. He played in midfield in a 0-0 draw at Addlestone & Weybridge on 24.3.81 and at centre-back in a 1-1 draw at Fareham on 8.4.81.

Marcus stayed with Deal for the 1981/82 season but in October 1981 he returned to Hartsdown again on loan. The Isle of Thanet Gazette called his return "a welcome boost" but Marcus played just once for the newly re-named Thanet United, appearing in midfield in a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Addlestone & Weybridge on 13.10.81. He then went back to Deal and stayed with the club until the summer of 1984 when he rejoined Thanet. Marcus had made a total of 162 appearances for Deal.

During the 1984/85 campaign he was a model of consistency in the Thanet side, making a total of 57 appearances (three as sub). Marcus played at right-back, centre-back and in midfield during the season and was described as being "powerful" by the local press. He scored two goals, one of which was a superb 25 yard effort in the last minute that gave United a 2-1 win over Waterlooville on 8.4.85. One of his best displays came during a 3-2 defeat at Canterbury on 18.9.84, the Isle of Thanet Gazette said that Marcus was "outstanding" at right-back. But on 29.9.84 he was sent off for two bookable offences in a 2-0 win over Tonbridge at Hartsdown. Thanet boss John Wickens said that Marcus had been "a silly lad."

After scoring for United as they went down 6-1 to Gillingham in a friendly at Hartsdown on 8.8.85 Marcus left the club for the last time and crossed Thanet to rejoin Ramsgate for the 1985/86 season. He went on to enjoy a lengthy stay with the Rams before retiring after winning the club's 'Player of the Year' award for the 1992/93 campaign.

Marcus later managed various youth teams at Southwood.

He was still playing local amateur football for Lloyds aged 46 during the 2002/03 season.
