In November 1989 he returned to Thanet to join Margate and although signed principally as a reserve team player he broke into the first team squad within weeks. Paul made his debut when he came on as a substitute as Margate were thrashed 6-1 at Dartford in a Southern League Cup tie on 12.12.89 and also featured as a sub in the next two first team games. He then returned to the reserves for the rest of the season and scored 11 goals in 18 games for them as they won the Kent League Division 2 title.

In the summer of 1990 Paul returned to Ramsgate and stayed at Southwood for a year before joining Kent County League side Phoenix Rovers for the start of the 1991/92 campaign.

Paul soon moved on to Herne Bay and in October 1991 he rejoined Ramsgate in a straight swap for John Munday. He spent almost three years with the Rams before returning to Margate in the summer of 1994.

Paul featured in most of Margate's friendlies ahead of the 1994/95 season and scored in a 4-3 defeat against Gillingham on 4.8.94. On 29.8.94 he came on as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat at Braintree but only made one other first team appearance - as a sub in a 4-1 win at Tonbridge on 7.9.94 - before going back to Ramsgate once more.

Paul dropped into Thanet amateur football for the 1997/98 season and carried on playing locally for several more years.

In the summer of 2011 he was playing cricket locally for Westgate's second team. His father Colin was a well-known figure in Thanet youth football and also served as trainer to Thanet United's reserve team during the 1981/82 campaign.
