6' 0" tall versatile player born in Margate who had trials for the Kent Boys' team and played for Margate Schools during his time as a pupil at King Ethelberts.

During the 1953/54 season Peter played for local amateur club Margate United and he then joined Margate in April 1954.

Peter made his first team debut on the left wing in a 2-2 draw at Deal on 13.11.54 but it was his only senior appearance of the 1954/55 season. He spent the remainder of the campaign in the reserves and scored nine times for them although early in the season he considered leaving the club to sign up for five years in the Royal Navy.

Peter played exclusively for the reserves during the 1955/56 season and started the 1956/57 campaign with them too but in October 1956 his National Service saw him posted to Germany.

In March 1957 Peter returned to the club having been demobbed and he resumed reserve team duty.

The 1957/58 season saw Peter plagued by various injuries but he still turned out regularly for the reserves. He also made a rare first team appearance (the second of his career) in a 2-2 draw at Canterbury on 2.5.58 and marked the occasion with his first goal for the club. He played one further first team game before the end of the season.

As ever Peter was a regular in the reserves during 1958/59 and he also made ten sporadic first team appearances, playing mainly as a centre-back. Unfortunately he suffered 'barracking' from Margate fans and claimed to "loathe" playing at Hartsdown. The abuse was strange since Peter was still often being watched by Football League clubs and had been made offers that he'd turned down as he was reluctant to become a full-time professional.

The 1959/60 season saw Peter win over the Hartsdown faithful and finally establish himself as a first team regular. He made 27 appearances and scored three times, including a 25 yard effort in a 5-2 win over Gloucester at Hartsdown on 23.1.60. His versatility came to the fore once again and Peter turned out as a centre-back, centre-forward, midfielder and left winger during the campaign.

During the 1960/61 season Peter was in and out of the first team but made 17 appearances to go past 50 for the club. He also scored twice and when called upon he turned in some impressive performances, mainly as a full-back or centre-back. The local paper described him Peter as "a tower of strength" and mentioned his "crushing tackles".

The 1961/62 campaign saw Peter back in the reserves for most of the season and he only made three first team appearances. They proved to be his last for the Margate and he left the club at the end of the season. In the report on one of his last performances Peter was bizarrely described as being "a man of seemingly many parts and limbs".

After his departure from Hartsdown he had a spell with Deal and was with them during the 1962/63 season. Peter then played for local amateur side Minnis Bay during the 1963/64 and 1964/65 campaigns.

Whilst with Margate Peter worked as an electrical wireman for a local television and installation firm. He died on 5.5.01 aged 67.

Peter had three sons, two of whom became well-known in Kent sporting circles. Kevin Hingley worked as sports reporter for newspapers including The Kentish Gazette but sadly died in February 2003 and Gary Hingley played rugby for Thanet Wanderers.
