Locally born son of Margate legend Ray Summers who joined Margate for the 1993/94 season and played regularly for the club's Under-18's side as well as making a few reserve team appearances in the Kent Midweek League. On 13.2.94 Rob took over in goal after eight minutes of an Under-18's game at Dover when Gavin Wright was sent off and a week later he spent part of the first half in goal after Luke Hills was dismissed in a 5-4 win over Snowdown's Under 18's. Rob later scored with a 30-yarder.

On 24.4.94 he made his first team debut at left-back in a 6-0 win over Braintree at Hartsdown Park and it was just a few weeks after Rob's 16th birthday. He also wore the number three shirt in Margate's next match - a 2-0 win at Buckingham on 30.4.94 - but didn't feature again before the end of the season.

Rob made his first senior appearance of the 1994/95 campaign when he came on as a substitute in a 2-0 home win over Merstham in an FA Cup tie on 10.9.94 and then made eight further sporadic appearances as a sub over the course of the next few months. On 22.10.94 he scored his first goal for Margate after coming on during a 3-0 win at Erith & Belvedere but Rob didn't start a match until 25.3.95 when he lined up at left-back in a 2-0 win at Burnham. He kept his place for a 3-1 defeat against Ashford at Hartsdown on 28.3.95 and then missed three games before finishing the season by starting seven of Margate's last eight matches at left-back. In total Rob made 19 appearances (nine as sub) and scored once during 1994/95.

He stayed at Margate for the 1995/96 campaign and on 9.9.95 Rob made his first appearance of the season when he played at left-back in a 5-2 win at Corinthian Casuals in the FA Cup. He made his next start in a 2-2 draw at Walton & Hersham in the FA Cup on 23.9.95 and on 17.10.95 Rob played in midfield as Margate lost 2-1 to Bashley at Hartsdown. He then spent the next five months playing for the Under-18's and reserves. Rob didn't feature in the first team again until 16.3.96 when he came on as a substitute in a 1-0 home defeat against Braintree. He also came on as a sub in a 2-0 win over Fareham at Hartsdown on 21.4.96 and a 1-0 defeat at Newport IOW on 30.4.96 to take his total appearances for the season to six (three as sub).

Rob was still a Margate player during the 1996/97 campaign but he didn't feature in the first team and in the summer of 1997 he joined Ramsgate.

Rob returned to Margate for the start of 1998/99 and played exclusively for the reserves before leaving the club again at the end of the season.

He started the 1999/00 campaign at Folkestone but in January 2000 Rob rejoined Ramsgate.

His next move took him to Herne Bay in July 2000 and Rob went on to spend several seasons with the club. On 15.9.01 he scored an own goal after only 11 seconds of a 4-2 home win over Erith & Belvedere but he later made amends by slotting home a penalty.

In January 2005 Rob linked up with Ramsgate for the third time and stayed there until October 2005 when he moved on to Whitstable.

He rejoined Herne Bay in the summer of 2006 and then had a short spell with Deal at the start of the 2007/08 campaign before returning to Margate a few weeks into the season.

Rob was signed as a reserve team player but on 2.10.07 he played at left-back as the first team lost 3-2 to East Thurrock United in an Isthmian League Cup tie at Hartsdown Park. It was his first appearance in Margate's senior side since 30.4.96 - a gap of over 11 years - and his first start since 17.10.95. Rob also wore the number three shirt in a 4-1 home defeat against Ebbsfleet in the Kent Senior Cup on 26.3.08 and played in midfield as Margate won 1-0 at Harrow on 26.4.08, the last day of the 2007/08 campaign.

In the summer of 2008 he joined Faversham of the Kent League but later in the 2008/09 season Rob returned to Margate to act as assistant manager for Mark Weatherly's reserve team.

In May 2009 Rob left Hartsdown Park once more to become player-manager of Ramsgate's reserve team. He was only 31 at the time.

Rob left Ramsgate at the end of the 2009/10 season and after a brief spell back at Herne Bay in the summer of 2010 he retired from football before the start of the 2010/11 campaign to spend more time with his young son Albert.

Rob came out of retirement for the start of the 2011/12 campaign when he joined Thanet Sunday Football League side Eclipse Recovery Services.
