Solid Northwich-born full-back with a powerful kick who began his career with Northwich Victoria before moving on to Witton and later Lostock Gralam.

Sam had a trial with Middlesbrough in 1930.

He joined Margate for 1934/35 - the first of the Arsenal 'nursery' seasons - and made his debut on the opening day of the campaign, playing at left-back in a 10-2 win over Dartford at Hartsdown Park on 25.8.34. Sam scored one of the goals and he went on to make a total of 35 appearances during the season, mostly playing at right-back, without adding to his goal tally.

Sam left Margate in the summer of 1935 and joined Crystal Palace. He made 30 first team appearances for the Eagles spanning the 1935/36 to 1938/39 seasons and also played 56 reserve team games.

Sam then had spells with Southport (during 1938/39) and Yeovil & Petters United before World War II.

He returned to Margate when the club re-formed for the 1946/47 season and made 31 appearances during the campaign, scoring twice. Margate won the Kent League title but Sam left the club at the end of the season.

In October 1947 he returned to Hartsdown Park to become trainer-coach of Margate's reserve team and also turned out for them.

Sam was still living locally in 1953 and in September of that year Margate held a collection for him as he'd been seriously ill for two years and unable to work for 15 months.

Sam died in Thanet aged only 46 on 24.2.56.
